Name: Vengeance
Target: Spirit
Duration: Until all charges used or one year, whichever comes first
School: Celestial or Earth (scroll must be marked as one or the other)
Components: P7, C1, D2, E3, S2
This formal magic causes a retributive strike of pure magical damage equal to ten points per level of formal magic ability possessed by the caster in the appropriate school to any being inflicting a killing blow upon the bearer of this formal magic. This damage occurs after the killing blow and is not avoidable in any manner. This formal magic has a number of charges equal to one third the number of levels of formal magic ability possessed by the primary caster in the appropriate school, rounded down.
1) Is there anyway to extend this with either Greater Extend or Expanded Enchantment?
2) Is being engulfed count as being inflicted with a killing blow?

1. I don't believe so, no.
2. Anything that "counts as a killing blow" as in "if it effects you you need a life spell" would trigger the vengence, as long as the attacker physically attacked you. (a death spell for instance, would not count...unless touch-cast, but you could refuse that, so long as you're concious.) So yes, engulfed would count, eaten, torn to pieces, etc.

1: I don't believe that you can. 2: Per the Formal Rules errata found here it states: Quote:VENGEANCE FORMAL MAGIC
Vengeance is only activated by an actual killing blow, not by anything like or similar to a killing blow.

Well see, thats where i'm confused...i'm think more of what Doug says...otherwise you could say "1 i snap your neck, 2 i snap your neck, 3 i snap your neck" thats not a "killing blow" it's something similar. You know what i mean.
I'm not sure...thats why i ask.

I can understand but that is what national has said on the matter in their errata and is states only a killing blow not something similar. I know of a chapter that unless you actually do a killing blow you aren't dead no matter what happend, save for death spells, instant death elixirs and bleeding out of course. So the snapping of the neck would be healed from healing.

I would do the "snap your neck/rip out your throat/shove a pointed sticks in your ear until it comes out from the other side" for role play, and follow it with the standard killing blow.

Just FYI - the "something similar" is more applicable to abilities such as a feeding ability, blood sucking, and other exotic abilities, not really 3-counted actions.
In the WAR monster manuals, the monster card will say something like "Feeding (60-second count), Acts as a Killing Blow". I've seen other abilities like "<blah> (X-counted action), Acts as a Killing Blow / Drain / Nausea Poison / etc", too, but "Acts as a Killing Blow" (while not being a KB) is far more common. It's generally a touch-based action (like a KB) that delivers some effect in a non-combat-mechanic fashion.
They are not whatever effect they are delivering (getting around a Vengence), but they have the same result.

A killing blow is a killing blow. A snapping of neck, ripping out of heart, shoving a really hot french fry into one's eye...........those are all healable. Seriously, I agree with Dan - you wanna snap someone's neck either do it before or after the killing blow. :)
